Tanweer Nawaz - Administrative Officer
Tanveer Nawaz

'My name is Tanweer Nawaz, I am employed by Reading Borough Council working 25 hours a week running the very busy Office of the Pakistan Community Centre. I have been here almost 9 years.

My work involves working with the Pakistani Community, Pakistan Community Centre Management Committee, Wokingham District Council and Reading Borough Council voluntary support section.

In the office I take bookings for the hall, take phone inquires, help people with filling forms and translations i.e. Birth Certificates and Marriage Certificates (Nikah Namas).  People also can get from the office Pakistani Passport Forms, Visa Forms, Sponsor Forms and Nadra Card Forms. I deal with general public inquires.

At the Centre I manage 20 casual workers check their attendance, make their payments at the end of every month.

I order the lunch club menus for 5 lunch clubs.  I have to make sure all our regular activities run smoothly at present our activities are: Sewing Class, aerobics twice a week, Lunch Clubs 3 times a week at this Centre and twice on the Oxford Road, Mother and Toddler Group, Youth Clubs 3 times in the week, self defence classes and Urdu Classes.

For all these activities I have to provide attendance figures on a quarterly basis to Reading Borough Council as well as figures for Bookings and Income.

Also part of my job is to network with other local organisations and to find small grants for projects at the Community Centre.  I have to attend meetings out of the Centre.

I also organise our ladies annual summer trip and our Pakistan Independence Day Celebrations. Other annual events also include the East Reading Festival, Children’s Festival, and Asian Art’s Week.'

Christine Borgars - Committee member appointed by Reading Borough Counci
Christine Borgars

Christine has supervised the computer room since 2000, developing popular and well-established drop-in computer clubs for boys and girls. Christine says "They learn how to use computers at school, but often they don't get enough time to practice what they have learnt, or just mess around on a computer and gain confidence in using one. Computer literacy is an essential skill these days and my clubs support this for young people who may not have a computer at home. The girls keep coming back for homework support, and many of the boys spend time there with their friends, using the computers and exchanging skills and gossip.  The computers are getting old but we have good broadband and a good colour printer, both of which seem to be essentials for homework."   There is also a session for ladies to practice for the Driving Test Theory test, or an introduction to using the Internet. (This is all as an unpaid volunteer.) Christine adds "Most of my working life was as an IT professional; we had a culture of helping one another, this is a way of passing on some of that knowledge and some of that culture to another generation."

Christine has also compiled the annual statement of accounts for the Treasurer, helped with contacts with the Council, helped with the Charity registration, and generally contributed to the working of the committee since Reading Borough Council first appointed her to the Committee in 1994 - through three Chairmen and three Treasurers and numerous committee members; probably only Ejaz Elahi has served continuously for longer.

Christine is also Chair of Governors at New Town Primary School, attended by many local Pakistani children. She stood down as a Labour Councillor for Park ward in 2006, but remains active in Reading Labour Party including managing their campaign database.
